START A GROUP | GROUP TYPE
The second tab in new group setup is Group Type. Every group has two settings that control how people will interact with their group: Privacy (Private or Open) and Messaging (Listserv, Moderated, or Mailing List) as seen below. By default, new groups are Private Listservs.

Privacy
Privacy settings control how people can sign up or join your group.
Private
Private groups have a closed membership and group members must be invited by a group administrator to join. Most of the groups that use Convos are private and this is the default setting.
Open
Open groups have an open membership and members can be invited to join, can join by finding the group in the Convos Directory, or can join by signing up on a group's signup page.
Messaging
Messaging settings control how email communications work within a group.
List Serv
A listserv is an open, two-way email platform where all group members can send messages to the entire group via the group's email address.
Any message sent to the group email address from a non-member are returned to the sender.
Moderated
Moderated groups work just like a listserv except all group messages must be approved by a group administrator before they are sent. This allows group admins to control what messages are sent to everyone but requires the extra step of moderation.
Any message that is sent to the group email address that is not from a group member is returned to the sender.
Mailing List
Mailing list groups are a one way email communication platform where only group admins and moderators can send messages to the entire group. Any message sent to the group email address that is not a group admin will be returned to the sender.
